Council defeats beer party proposal By Chris Strunk Last Updated: April 09, 2015 Without a vote, the Valley Center City Council said "no" to booze at the city-owned Community Building. Because no one on the eight-member city council would offer a motion April 7, a proposal to allow alcohol consumption at the facility in Lions Park died. "I haven't had one person say they really would appreciate keg parties at that building," said council member Judith Leftoff, who added that she spoke to residents around Lions Park about the proposal. "… I am 110 percent against it." City Administrator Joel Pile said the city has received a number of requests from residents who would like to serve alcohol at functions in the building. The city does not allow alcohol consumption on any city-owned property. The Community Building is available to be rented by the public, but no alcohol can be served. "I'm not 110 percent against it," said council member Terry Ishman. "I'm not 110 percent for it either. … I'd like to see some rules in place before I vote on this." Council member Lou Cicirello said he was leery about the proposal, but wanted to find a way to accommodate the requests. "I would like to see some rules placed around this," he said. City Administrator Joel Pile said the city council could set criteria for renters to follow, but the council didn't get that far. "There are houses all around this," said council member Marci Maschino. "I'm not sure I would want a wild party next to my house." The proposal died because there was no motion for or against it. "Right or wrong, the easiest thing is to just leave it like it is," said council member Al Hobson. In other business April 7, the council: •Approved a bid of $96,173 from Mies Construction for sanitary sewer and waterline improvements in Valley Creek Estates. In a related vote, the council approved a bid of $202,541 from Cornejo & Sons for paving and drainage improvements in the subdivision. The work will be paid through homeowner specials. •Voted to allow the city to negotiate temporary easement compensations for a sidewalk project on Goff, Fieldstone and Clover. The work will start next spring. •Voted 6-2 to approve a resolution saying the city had provided adequate services to annexed properties on the city's west side. Several homeowners are seeking to be de-annexed. Hobson and Leftoff voted against the resolution. |
