Katie Hurlbutt lunges across the finish line for first place in the 100-meter dash final at the Valley Center Invitational April 17. Teammate Sydney Cummings placed second with a time of 13.00 seconds, just off Hurlbutt’s time of 12.75.

Valley Center girls second,

In their first team meet of the season, the Valley Center High School boys’ and girls’ track teams placed fourth and second, respectively, at their home invitational April 17.

The meet saw a few individual personal records as well as the return of pole vaulting for Valley Center.

“Any time you are in the top third of a 12-team meet, you know the kids are doing good things,” said coach Daniel Smith. “However, I am not overly concerned right now with how we are doing as a team. The thing I am focused on right now is our conditioning and techniques. I think the kids are working hard right now to improve on those two things.”

The girls were led by sprinters Katie Hurlbutt and Sydney Cummings as well as long-distance specialists Brooke Vining and Page Miller. Thrower Aryn Sander also picked up team points in discus and shot put.

The boys had an individual first-place finish and a relay team that placed first.

In its first appearance in at least four years for Valley Center, three Hornets competed in the pole vault. None placed in the top six.

“You need a qualified coach to work with the kids on techniques so they do not injure themselves,” Smith said. “We have that now in coach Justin Strodman, so we are able to have vaulters again. I think here in the next few weeks we are going to see some kids really improve in that area.”

Hurlbutt won the 100-meter dash and the 300-meter hurdles and was fourth in the 200.

Vining won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, while Miller placed second in both events. They also were part of the 3,200-meter relay team that took first.

Sander won the discus and was fourth in the shot put.

Cummings was fifth in the long jump and second in the 100-meter dash with a season record.

“I love the intensity that Sydney brings to each track meet,” Smith said of the senior. “She is extremely competitive and is very tough on herself. ... I think she is close to running her fastest ever.”

Bethany McCormick placed fifth in the javelin.

Junior Karlee Wedekind was part of the fourth-place 400-meter relay, sixth-place 1,600-meter relay and first-place 3,200-meter relay teams.

“I really appreciate the effort Karlee brings to practice and the meets,” Smith said. “She works hard every day and she is getting ready to break through in several different events that will help us compete as a team.”

Sophomore Joe Fisher was second in the 100-meter dash with a season record and set a personal record to win the 200. He also was the lead leg on the first-place 400-meter relay team.

“I am excited about the things Joe is doing for us right now,” Smith said. “He is running fast in the open events and is helping the 4x100 relay be competitive.”

Trey Lasseter was fifth in the 200 and was part of the 400-meter relay team. Nate Telford took third in the 110-meter hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles.

Taylor Johnson returned to the team after an illness to make waves in the long jump. He placed second with a jump of 20-6. He also was part of the 400-meter relay team and placed fourth in the triple jump.

“It was good to get Taylor back competing,” Smith said.

Junior Aaron Lindstrom was sixth in the discus with a personal record 122-8.5. He also set personal records in the shot put and triple jump, where he was sixth.

“You typically don’t see someone who throws in the field events have the type of success he is having in the triple jump, but that speaks to the type of athlete Aaron is becoming,” Smith said. “The sky is the limit with Aaron.”
