There is a correction to the information about a party for Mildred Riggs’ 100th birthday on Dec. 12. Her grandchildren will be hosting a party on Dec. 13, and not Dec. 12 as indicated in the Dec. 4 issue of the News. The party will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 12 at Presbyterian Manor in Newton. The family requests no gifts, please. She is the oldest living graduate of Valley Center schools and has had four generations of children graduate from Valley Center schools. A card shower is also being held for her. Send cards to Mildred Riggs, c/o Presbyterian Manor, 1200 E. Seventh, Newton KS 67114.

The Kechi Senior Center Over 55 Club will hold its Christmas party at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at 109 Chippewa in Kechi. Take a white elephant gift, wine and a snack to share.

The Bel Aire Senior Center will sponsor Christmas Caroling beginning at 7 p.m. Dec. 19. Call the center at 744-2451, ext. 121, for the location.

The Lay Family of Sedgwick will perform a concert at 2 p.m. Dec. 19 at Valley Center Christian Church, Fifth and Seneca. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Lay Family includes parents Mike and Ronnetta and eight children who perform a variety of musical instruments.

Garret Guthrie, grandson of Dale and Arlene Guthrie of Valley Center, was named this fall a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. He is a senior on the men’s soccer team at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The award is given annually to a senior student-athlete across nine NCAA Division I sports. It honors students for athletic and academic performance as well as character and community service.

Guthrie, a 2005 Maize High graduate, is the son of Neil and DeAnn Guthrie.

Guthrie, who has started all 19 games this season in the midfield, carries a 3.66 GPA as a chemistry majory.
